The story of Dorothy and her travels to the Land of OZ is the story of a hero’s journey. Dorothy left what she saw as her dreary home in Kansas and was transported to a new, exciting, and sometimes frightening land.

There she was befriended by the scarecrow, the tin-man and the lion who represented the brains, heart and courage that are needed to successfully complete a hero’s journey. Once Dorothy had faced and conquered the many challenges put before her, she returned home with a new perspective and feeling of confidence.

Our scholars are all embarking on their own hero’s journey and many of them will return home to our community ready to step into the roles of leaders and visionaries. But they need our support to complete their journey.

Please join our Friends of Dorothy family. Make a commitment to support our outstanding LGBTQA students; for in the end we all gain from this shared journey.

Volunteer as a Scholarship Interviewer

Every year we recruit volunteers to screen, interview and select our scholarship recipients. Volunteers work in teams and are given the task of reading and evaluating applications, choosing the semifinalists they want to interview, and then selecting the final award winners.

GSBA provides training for our volunteers on such issues as diversity, sexuality issues, interviewing skills, and team expectations and dynamics. Each team is headed by a facilitator who is there to answer questions, manage conflict and to make sure that the interview process flowed as smoothly as possible.

It is a very exciting and rewarding process and a wonderful way to learn more about the scholarship program and to see first-hand the difference it is making in the lives of our students.

Host a Yellow Brick Road House Party

One of the best ways to raise money and awareness about the GSBA Scholarship Program is to host a GSBA Scholarship House Party. A house party can be any kind of gathering of your friends, family, or colleagues with the primary objective being to learn more about the Scholarship Program and raise money for the Scholarship Fund.

GSBA has created a House Party Kit for you with all the information, instructions, and resources that you will need to throw a great party. GSBA will also provide speakers to talk about the program and students to talk with your guests about their experience of receiving a scholarship and how that has impacted their lives.

All you have to do is invite the people and make "the ask" for donations which is really easy to do after your guests have heard the incredibly compelling stories of the scholars.

If you would like more information about House Parties or need help planning your party, please call 206-363-9188 or send an e-mail to: .
